Does Every Towed Vehicle Need A Battery Charger? ⚡️
There is almost nothing more frustrating when you're flat towing than arriving at your destination and finding your towed vehicle battery is dead. However, what you may not know is that this isn't impacted by the presence of a braking system - certain vehicles actually drain their own batteries while in the flat towing configuration.
This concept is called parasitic drain.
Parasitic drain is something that affects all vehicles differently and is mostly impacted by how many under-the-hood components stay on while towing. Certain vehicle makes are more susceptible than others, so it's important to know where your vehicle falls on that spectrum.

    Good post, the first run with the new antenna and the passenger front sensor with the hum mid coach was still spotty at highway speeds. I returning home today i moved the hub to top of the dashboard and no drop outs at all and the rears are no longer spotty with the new antenna even with the router near the hub.

    • @RVi

      That's a bit surprising - usually, a dashboard would be the place where we'd see some of the highest levels of interference. However, if that spot works well, then definitely continue to use it there!

    Good overview, I have the 10 sensor Tire Patrol and found that center of the bed, fully charged hub, antenna pointed at the tablet and in direct line of sight of the tablet to have the best results. My only issue is the airplane mode on the tablet, every so often it goes on airplane mode, absolutely drives me crazy. I know there's a process to fix it, but that multi step process is not very user friendly.

    • @RVi
      @RVi 23 дні тому

      Unfortunately that is a hard-coded piece of the Android operating system that can pop in and out at times. We have tried to mitigate it, but you're right - it can definitely get annoying. One thing you can try is to factory restore the tablet. It doesn't guarantee Airplane Mode will go away forever but it does seem to help reduce the frequency of it. The downside is that you wind up having to repair to the rest of your system again, which is a process. If you wind up wanting to go that route, we have a video showing how to go through the restore process here: ua-cam.com/video/9VU6X_03wZk/v-deo.html

    Good video, just like to add this, even though your motorhome has a tow rating let's say 5000 lbs or 8000 lbs, it does not necessarily mean that you can tow a 5000 or 8000 lbs. vehicle safely, it all comes down to the math. The GVWR and GCWR that are set by the chassis manufacturers are not a suggested or recommended numbers, they are Do Not exceed numbers. The CCC/OCCC of the coach have a big variance on the GCWR. What I tell motorhome owners, 'Know your weight'. because weight matters.

    • @RVi
      @RVi Місяць тому

    Great video! 👍 I use the RVIBrake3 portable unit and it's worked very well on my toad (2017 GMC Acadia) - excellent product. It does get a bit cumbersome putting it in and out of my car each time I tow. The RVI Shadow brake looks like a real winner. What percentage of your sales of brake units are for the Shadow and what are for the RVIBrake3? I'm just curious.....

    • @RVi
      @RVi 2 місяці тому

      Thanks, Fred! The RVibrake3 is still our most popular unit, since it's been out since around 2011-2012. The Shadow, on the other hand, didn't get a wide release until 2021. In the RV industry, it can take awhile to make inroads, especially on the dealer side of things where certain dealerships and shops already have an installed unit of choice. However, as the Shadow has gained visibility within the industry, those numbers have definitely shifted in its favor.

    I full time in my RV. I have 6 sensors on my RV and 4 on my towed vehicle. I travel about 1-2 months each spring and fall and the rv sites the rest of the time. About 5 months summer and 5 months winter. The sensors on the Dual rear wheels of the RV are impossible to remove unless i take off the rear outside tires. With that said the sensors do not come off the RV. I have never gotten a low battery warning on my command tablet for any of the sensors. They just stop working. Is this due to them being inactive for a few months or is this a software problem with my tablet? Had your system sinse 2021 and need to order my 3rd set of sensors now due to dead batteries.

    One criteria you didn't mention was the RV capability. Just because the car is 4 down towable, doesn't mean that the RV can. Classic is the Fort Transit with a 4000lb limit and the Mercedes Sprinter with a 4200 lb limit making the Jeep Gladiator (and Grand Cherokee) too heavy as the push 5000 lbs. Hitting right at 4200 lbs is the Jeep 2dr stripped Wranger, and Cherokee Trailblazer which are maxed out and loading gear makes them overweight compared to something in the 3000-3800 lb range. The cloice among new models is very limited - Chevy Trailblazer AWD/Buick Encore GX AWD; New this year is Chevy Trax, but not prior models, Chevy Equinox but not its GMC twin, Ford Escape Hybrid and Ford Maverick Hybrid. A few manual transmission models, but that is about it.

    • @RVi
      @RVi 4 місяці тому

      That is true; towing vehicles like the Transit and Sprinter are going to vastly limit your options. In fact, most Class B's. are going to be extremely limited. However, most Class C and Class A motorhomes are going to be far less limited and can safely tow most vehicles on the market, which is the context we're using in this particular video. But it's certainly a valid point to consider!

    I have a 2019 Chevy Equinox. I am sad to hear that the Equinox is a pig on TOAD Battery-voltage and that you're charger cannot keep it fully charged. So if it's a Charger, then why can't it keep up? Why don't you design one that can? I like the idea that I can see the Battery-voltage on the RVi3 tablet, but it appears I am going to watching the Battery-voltage value dwindle as the day wears on. Lots of people tow Chevy Equinox and never mention this battery drain issue. Can you tell me how you tested for this battery-drain? Over how much time does it take for the Equinox engine-battery to drain down to a harmful voltage value? I'm sure you have documentation from your testing that you can share with me. I already have a KISAE DC-to-DC charging system that runs off the RV Alternator (2021 MB Sprinter 3500)... and it charges our 640Ah lithium coach batteries up to 50 Amps an hour. Your Xantrex Charger idea is also a DC-to-DC Charger. I'm not sure I want two DC-to-DC Chargers in my overall RV system. Thanks for your help.

    • @RVi
      @RVi 5 місяців тому

      Hi there! Our charger can keep up with a max of 10A - which is more than enough for almost every towed vehicle. Unfortunately, the Equinox is typically pulling about 15-18 while in its flat tow mode (and that's with pulling fuses). Because of that, you'll generally see the Equinox die in less than 5 hours. We've seen it happen as quick as 2 hours. It does vary a bit. Unfortunately, it's tough for us to redesign an entire product to accommodate a single vehicle, when that same product works across any other scenario. As such, we do have a higher amperage charger that we recommend to customers. It's not made by us and we're not associated with the company in any way, but it is one that a lot of customers have had success with. You can find that charger here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0851TPKV7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 If you do go with the charger listed above, we would recommend just using that one charger as opposed to trying to wire it in with your existing charger. Hope that helps!

    • @deansimpson6618
      @deansimpson6618 5 місяців тому

      @@RVi If I still want to use your Charger, will it work? Will it still charge, but not top off the battery... according to what you say? Will the Charger burn-out? In many forums and FB groups for the Chevy Equinox, people have said they suffer no dead batteries while towing the car behind their RVs... so how do they do it then... without using the DC-to-DC Charger link you posted... and just using a basic battery charging kit?

    • @RVi
      @RVi 4 місяці тому

      Hi! No, our charger will not work on the Equinox. It may not necessarily cause a problem - but it wouldn't actually charge the battery in most cases. We say most because the Equinox drain can range fairly drastically when towing. As stated in our previous comment, it's typical to see 15-18A of drain, but that really can range anywhere from 10ish to 20A. If you're down around that 10A range, then our charger would keep up - but if the drain goes up for any real length of time, your battery is going to start dying. In most cases, with an Equinox, folks are using some kind of charge line/charger than has the ability to charge at over a 10A rate, or they're getting really, really lucky using something that doesn't pull as much. Luck is obviously not a sustainable way to travel, and it's also why we can't support the charger on that vehicle. So, as a rule, no - our charger will not work with that specific vehicle.

    Nice quick overview Chris. One thing I think should be removed from the tablet is the (Airplane) mode, very frustrating, no reason this Airplane mode needs to be on it, I know it's a android device but in development it should have been removed.

    • @RVi
      @RVi 5 місяців тому

      We would honestly love to make that happen because we realize it can be a point of pain! Unfortunately, because it's hard-coded into the Android OS, it's impossible to fully remove. However, we are exploring a number of ways to "trick" the tablet OS so that airplane mode is never engaged. In the meantime, we have added a "No WiFi" warning to software version 1.7.7 to alert you anytime the tablet does set itself into that mode.

    I purchased the RVi3 a few months ago. I pull a Jeep Wrangler behind a Class C. It appears to be working fine. The only issue I had was getting the pin in claw in the correct position. I am sure that it is in the instructions and I probably overlooked it but I would suggest that there be some sort of warning or something more obvious written somewhere in the kit bringing attention to this. I communicated with RVi and they even sent me a new claw without catching this. I installed the new claw. Once I moved the pin it appears to be working great. I think I remember that there was instructions in the new claw that stated where the pin needed to be for my particular Jeep. It is a great product and I did receive timely customer support. Thanks.

      The 2.3L Bronco is a great choice as well. The 2.7L Bronco is a bit tougher/more complicated to get working with a braking system, but it can be done. Thanks for watching!

    You got the manufacturer correct but clearly the wrong model. The correct answer is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee is lighter and actually incredibly comfortable and quiet where the Gladiator is like rinding in a noisy torture chamber sharing its uncomfortable seats with the Wrangler.

    • @RVi
      @RVi 7 місяців тому

      While we're big Gladiator fans, the Grand Cherokee is also a great car! It's honestly hard to go wrong with any Jeep. The Wrangler, for example, has been a flat towing staple for many, many years.

    Why it drains? Because breaking and turn signals operate from the battery itself.

    • @RVi
      @RVi 8 місяців тому

      Hi Steve, whenever a vehicle is in its flat towing mode, certain computer systems and components under the hood remain 'on'. This is what creates the varying levels of battery drain.

    We have a 2022 Equinox and it’s very easy to flat tow. Yes, we can’t use your tow charge product but there are alternative chargers that work great. Picked mine up from Etrailer. Love your braking system.

    • @RVi
      @RVi 8 місяців тому

      Hi Dave - I'm glad to hear that's been your experience for sure! Unfortunately, for a lot of our customers, the Equinox is a constant source of frustration while towing, and, on the whole, we definitely encourage folks to look elsewhere. However, whenever there are exceptions to the rule, that's always nice! We appreciate you being a customer!

    Which one of your braking systems is best for active brakes?

    • @RVi
      @RVi 8 місяців тому

      Hi there! Both systems will actually work great with active brakes! There's not really one that's better than the other, at least in that respect. However, for a detailed breakdown on which brake might be right for you, we'd encourage checking out this video: ua-cam.com/video/682iQRrZPao/v-deo.html

    Ok I need to know how the RVi is powered because my 2003 Newmar dutch star's 7 pin does not provide power. My brake system drains my towed vehicle's battery (2011 Honda CRV). So does the RVi towed battery charger need power from my RV to work and if so, how do I get it to your battery charger?

  • @QLFProductions
    @QLFProductions 9 місяців тому

    This only works if your RV 7 pin has a 12 volt charge line correct? The charge is coming from the tow vehicle not the RVi, am I correct?

    • @RVi
      @RVi 8 місяців тому

      Hi there! The charge is actually coming from the motorhome - the Towed Battery Charger Plus doesn't supplement or produce any kind of charge on its own. Instead, it's acting like a "smart gateway" for the power coming through your 6 or 7 pin connector.

      Hi Gary! We would always recommend purchasing a Command Center if you don't have one - it's going to make your life much, much simpler. However, we do have a video on this channel showing how to manually pair to your BWA here: ua-cam.com/video/R-3sJFgm910/v-deo.html

      Thanks, but I don't have the tablet anymore, this happened over a year ago while traveling. I have been sent cables in the past and charging doesn't seem to be an issue. I'm convinced that the tablets can't take the rough ride of our coach. But thanks for the response, I'll continue to use the brake without a tablet,, just one less thing to bounce off our dashboard, lol.

    Is this unit waterproof? Could it be installed on a trailer which may see some light rain while sitting or driving?

    • @RVi
      @RVi 9 місяців тому

      Our units under the hood are not fully waterproof, but they are weatherproof - so any normal conditions (rain, snow, etc.) shouldn't affect them. However, they will not survive full submersion.
